Commercial

 

Commercial photography includes industrial, editorial, corporate, fashion and advertising. The work you do may end up in brochures, annual reports, web sites or books. Commercial photography tends to be better paid than weddings and portraits. The photographer will often have to work under the direction of the art director from an advertising agency.

 

Most commercial photographers structure their prices on the basis of:

 

  • An hourly rate
  • Materials
  • Extras

 

Commercial skills are usually of a more varied nature and often have higher technical standards. On one occasion I had to photograph original works of art for inclusion in a book. The main problem was that the first half of the photographs were taken by a pro in Melbourne. Therefore, my shots had to match his technically. I had to liaise with him by telephone to ensure the lenses, film, exposure and lighting was as close as possible to his set-up.
