The photograph is a universal language and transcends all language barriers. The impact of a portrait is instantaneous – there is no need for the viewer to read and digest. Interpretation of the image is not thwarted by the literary ability of the viewer.
The photographer can control the lighting and design factors in the image. Studio shots and formal portraits are examples of where the photographer has maximum control. With candid portraiture the controls are less but the photographer can still control angle of shooting, focal length and to some degree the lighting. Never underestimate the power of these tools in making the (photo: Brenda Mae) image. The ‘seeing' photographer consciously decides to ‘make' photographs rather than ‘take' photographs.
